Prognosis : Your Diagnosis

Prognosis: Your Diagnosis is an application freely downloadable from the iPhone App Store or the Android Market. It allows doctors and medical students to learn how to treat real life patients via an interactive cartoon style narrative. It is the first medical application on the iPhone to ‘gamify’ medical education. The application contains over 60 cases, each of which represents a common clinical scenario. It effectively promotes serious learning – as each case teaches important clinical points required in day to day medical practice. The game judges the doctors’ performance and lets him know how well he did, what went wrong (or right!)
Traditionally medical education involves tedious study of voluminous text books. This has been the bane on the life of many a medical student. Prognosis: Your Diagnosis seeks to take medical education to a different level – it is serious stuff but the process of learning is made fun.
Each case lists the history of the patient and the findings revealed through a preliminary examination. The ‘Doctor’ has to figure out what tests would be the most appropriate to perform on the patient and the best course of treatment. The application also has valuable information pertaining to the treatment of the patient with contributions from leading consultants – specialists physicians and surgeons in the given area - presented in the form of a discussion. Doctors ‘participating’ in the game can share their knowledge and experience on the case by posting a comment on the discussion. Importantly opinions are moderated, thus spamming is eliminated, but the system entertains both compliant and contrary opinions. The carton style narrative is very interesting and is certainly very unique in this very serious domain of medical practice.
The impact of this product is very evident from the fact that it was the #1 free medical app in the USA up to December 2010 and is still ranked within the top 50. Since its introduction to the Android market some four months ago Prognosis: Your Diagnosis has retained its place among the top 15 apps in that Market.
There are currently 500,000 users worldwide. Moreover it is recommended as a learning aid by six Medical Colleges in the USA and five in Europe.

The user satisfaction is reflected in the many positive comments on the site.
Jurors ’ Evaluation
Sri Lankan parents living overseas often lament that their children are completely unfamiliar with their mother tongue either because there is no means of teaching it to them or because the Sinhala Language text books available for learning do not keep the attention of the child. E-Sinhala Guruthuma has potential to change all that. This website is one of a kind with content helping people learn both written and spoken Sinhala. The Sinhala Language is one of the worlds oldest living languages which is still very vibrant and having a celebrated history of over 2300 years. It is also a unique language since it is only spoken in Sri Lanka thus making it difficult for anyone living overseas to learn the language.
The lessons consist of functional language and vocabulary
introduced in a clear context and made attractive with flash animations. What makes the site special though is the use of sound files so that the user can listen to every word and get the pronunciation just right. For ease of pronunciations the Sinhala word is written in English.
Other interesting useful features comprise worksheets which can be printed out for practicing Sinhala hand writing. The site is enriched with activities, stories and rhymes to stimulate learning. For the benefit of those who do not have connectivity the developer is in the process of developing a CD version of the site. Site statistics indicate a growing user community. Comments on the site clearly reflects the level of user acceptance. “හරිම සන්තෝසයි. සිංහල භාෂාවට සාහිත්යයට කරන සේවය ඉතා අගය කොට සලකමි. මට මේවට ගෙවන්න විදියක් නෑ. ඒ හින්දා ඇඩ් කීපයක ට ලින්ක් කලා”. - ලක්ෂ්මන් තිලකරත්න, May 21, 2011 03:11 pm .

Bhasha Dictionary is a centralized Sinhala-English e-Dictionary with multiple modes of access. The service can be accessed via a mobile phone (Bhasha SMS-Dic), via a chat client (Bhasha Chat-Dic) or via a web browser (Bhasha Web-Dic). It is the only Sinhala-English Chat Dictionary and the only Sinhala- English SMS Dictionary. It is also the only Sinhala-English Web Dictionary which has built in transliteration support. Because of its multiple modes of access, users can use this e-dictionary from where ever they are thus minimizing the impediments brought on by the language barrier in day to day work.
This application will soon be available on the Android Market further improving its accessibility.
It is reported that English is fluently spoken only by about 10% of the population although it is widely used for education, scientific and commercial purposes in the Country. This clearly indicates that a large majority of our population would need English Language support in their day to day work. Bhasha Dictionary is an excellent tool in this context. Many of us fall back on dictionary support in reading, writing and understanding English Language documents and while dictionaries; even e-Dictionaries are commonplace an e-Dictionary with multiple modes of access offers singular benefits to the user. He or she does not have to be in front of a computer, or connected to the Internet to seek the support of the Bhasha Dictionary for his or her daily use. A user not familiar with typing in Sinhala Unicode can still use this product typing in ‘Singlish” ( Sinhala words spelt in the English script) since it has inbuilt transliteration support.
Importantly it is not a static dictionary but evolves with use and the developer hopes to build it to be the most comprehensive Sinhala-English Dictionary in the Country. Although currently available only to Etisalat customers, it is expected that it will soon be available in the Android Market and through other mobile service providers.
