In the modern world, museums are facing a threat of lack of visitors. Modern technologies offer people easy and competitive ways of education and leisure activities and to also combine learning with entertaining experience. To face these challenges, the Department of National Museums has realized that they need to switch from static traditional way of exhibits presentation into modern technological way.The main objective of the project was to develop an Android/iOS based application which virtually put museums to a visitor’s fingertips. This application will provide visitors not only rich contents but also interactive presentation of the museum’s artifacts.
The solution developed for the Sri Lanka Museums has following functionalities: Content module (Text, Voice and Photos), Indoor Positioning System, Social Connect and Sharing and AR viewer. The App can be further improved by integrating new museums and Augmented Reality (AR) / Virtual Reality (VR) features to enhance the interactivity.
This is a content rich app that acts as a mobile guide for visitors to Museums in Sri Lanka. It has a floor plan for easy navigation and its innovative features and functions allow users to view and identify exhibits via the scanning of the bar code, entering the code or through the augmented reality function. Users can use the voice or text function to obtain the background of the exhibit. It is a very handy tool for visitors to the museum.
‘Mobile4E’, which is a mobile based English Language Learning application, which was developed with the objective of enhancing English Language learning by providing flexible means of learning through mobile based learning lessons for university students and school leavers.
Mobile4E is based on the curriculum developed by the Ministry of Education to address English knowledge and skill of school leavers in order to improve their chance of employability or higher education. This curriculum is known as “English for ALL”. Mobile4E is a m-learning solution developed on top of the e-learning product, which was developed for English for All curriculums, by the University of Colombo School Of Computing (UCSC) in a previous assignment. Mobile4E is developed by the mobile learning research group of UCSC and it is funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) of Sri Lanka.
Mobile4E is a product which consists of three apps to learn and improve English language depending on the knowledge and skill of the users, namely: Elementary, Intermediary and Advanced. The apps are categorized based on the difficulty of the lesson content. Each application contains five main functionalities which are lessons, activities, favorites, scorecard and forums.

It also has forum activities, which encourage discussions. It is expected that Mobile4E will ensure learner engagement through informal learning shifting from the formal classroom based learning.
